Adding your EPUB to Kindle

Amazon and Kindle are super convenient, but they don't always treat authors very well, which is why more and more authors are selling their books directly to their readers. In this short tutorial, I'm going to walk you through how you can still read my stories on your Kindle, even if you bought the book directly from me.

Epub is the most common format that you'll run across when talking about ebooks and is how I'm going to refer to the book throughout this tutorial. However, this process also works with PDFs, Word documents, and a bunch of others.

Step 1: Setup Your Kindle Account

First, we need to gather your Kindle specific email.
  1. Open the Kindle app on your phone or tablet.
  2. Go to "More", then "Settings"
  3. Under "Send to Kindle Email Address" you'll see the email for this Kindle. Make a note of it. You'll need it in a minute.

(Optional) Second, if you bought one of my ebooks, you'll have made the purchase through a platform called Gumroad. If you would like to have the ebook sent directly to your Kindle from Gumroad, you need to tell Kindle that it's ok for Gumroad to send it things. This is optional since you can download the EPUB file and send it to your Kindle from the same email you use to sign into Amazon. However, the following steps simplify the process for this and all future ebooks, making it so they can be sent to your Kindle with one-click.

To allow Gumroad to send your purchased EPUB directly to your Kindle

  1. Go to your Amazon Account Settings > Digital Content and Devices > Content Library. Or follow this link: https://www.amazon.com/hz/mycd/digital-console/contentlist/pdocs/dateDsc.
  2. From here, click on Preferences > Personal Document Settings
  3. Under "Approved Personal Document E-mail List" click on "Add new email address"
  4. Enter This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and click the button "Add Address"

Step 2: Sending Your EPUB to Your Kindle

If you followed the optional step above:

  1. Login to your Gumroad Library
  2. Select the book from your Library
  3. Click the "Send to Kindle" button and enter the email of your Kindle device from Step 1.
  4. Click Send.

You're all done!

If you skipped the step of adding Gumroad to your Kindle account:

  1. Login to your Gumroad Library
  2. Select the book from your Library
  3. Click download
  4. Login to whatever email you use for your Amazon account
  5. Attach the EPUB file to a new email
  6. Send it to the email of your Kindle device from Step 1.

Regardless of the option, it may take a few minutes for your new book to appear on your device.

Conclusion

Now you can enjoy the book from the convenience of your Kindle app or device, knowing that by buying directly from me (or any other author) you have helped them more than if you'd purchased from Amazon.

Thank you for being willing to buy direct! It really does make a difference.
