The Brass Plates

by Philip G. White

The city is behind them. The hardest road is not.

Lehi's family has escaped Jerusalem and found refuge in a hidden valley near the Red Sea. But sixteen-year-old Nephi is struggling. His faith feels thin, his older brothers grow more bitter with every mile, and the heavens seem silent. Then, one night, he climbs a ridge in the dark and refuses to come down without an answer.

The answer comes, and on its heels, a command: return to Jerusalem and obtain the brass plates from Laban, the most dangerous man in the city.

Inside Laban's house, his steward, Zoram, guards the sacred plates and quietly shields the prophets his master hunts. But as Laban and his conspirators close in on the king, Laban bargains the plates for an army of his own. The king's entire household will die and the plates will be lost unless Zoram can do the unthinkable.

As pilgrims flood the city and the coup draws near, two young men on opposite sides of Laban's gate must each decide how far obedience will ask them to go, and what they are willing to become to answer.
